Distant Voices

The purpose of this collection is not to classify the human voice, but rather to take the listener to a pleasant wander through the voices of the five continents. This collection presents a great variety of vocal tone colours —acrid, nasal, murmured, suave, expressing serenity or despair— and techniques —the hoarse flamenco voices, the nasal voices of Mandingo jelimusolu, the voiced breath-intake in Siberia, the skilled glottal stops of Iranian singers, the throat songs of Kirghiz nomads, the shrill voices of elder women in New Caledonian choirs, the arty ornamentations of Arab-Andalucian songs etc. Vocal configuration is just as varied, spanning solo performances, large polyphonic formations and delicate exchanges between the voice and an instrument —as amongst the Roms in Rumania, or in Iran. For all lovers of vocal music. Released in 2004.
